WUCs under Tungabhadra CADA in Karnataka
Tungabhadra Irrigation Project is one of the largest protective irrigation systems in South India catering water to Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in Krishna Basin. The progress of Water Users Cooperative Societies in Tungabhadra Irrigation Project in Karnataka at the end of 2008 is that the total number of WUCs to be formed is 835, of which 443 with an corresponding area of 1,86,220 ha have been formed. The numbers of WUCs that have entered into Memorandum of Understanding with Irrigation Department are 190 with an corresponding area of 43,802.64 ha. It is also reported that the handing over has taken place in those 190 WUCs. The functional grant i.e. State share of Rs. 95.89 lakhs, Central Share Rs. 95.89 lakhs, Farmers Share Rs. 20.78 lakhs has been deposited in the Bank in the names of WUCs accordingly (WALMI, Dharwad). In addition, the CADA has also provided grants for the construction office cum godown to WUCs for administration and income generating activities.
