WUCs under Tungabhadra CADA in Karnataka
Tungabhadra Irrigation Project is one of the largest protective irrigation systems in South India catering water to Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in Krishna Basin. The progress of Water Users Cooperative Societies in Tungabhadra Irrigation Project in Karnataka at the end of 2008 is that the total number of WUCs to be formed is 835, of which 443 with an corresponding area of 1,86,220 ha have been formed. The numbers of WUCs that have entered into Memorandum of Understanding with Irrigation Department are 190 with an corresponding area of 43,802.64 ha. It is also reported that the handing over has taken place in those 190 WUCs. The functional grant i.e. State share of Rs. 95.89 lakhs, Central Share Rs. 95.89 lakhs, Farmers Share Rs.

The Irrigation and Command Area Development (I&CAD), Government of Andhra Pradesh recently completed elections to Distributary Committee and is contemplating to hold elections for the project committees. The APFMIS Act 1997, emphasises formation of water users associations at three levels i.e. WUAs at primary level, Distributary Committees at Distributary level and Project Committees at project level.
